Government Shutdown Is Not Impacting the Federal Courts in Virginia (for now) By Josh Silverman on October 01, 2013

I promise this is not meant to be a political post (as tempting as it may be), but to provide information about how the federal government shutdown will be impacting the courts.  State courts of course are not impacted.  The federal courts are funded through a combination of user fees and fines as well as appropriations for Congress.  At least for the short term the federal district courts in Virginia will continue operating as normal by relying on user fees and fines.  I suspect if the stalemate extends for more than 3-4 weeks, they will have to start limiting operations.
